One of the key documents during your fundraising process will be your powerpoint presentation or your deck. This is what you’ll use during your meetings with VCs to pitch your company. Most, if not every time, you’ll use this during your first meeting with VCs and often times in subsequent meetings when pitching to new partners. This is where you get to tell the story of your company, lay out all the key pieces of your business and your game plan for building the business. Below are three points that lay out how to make a good investor presentation.
First, the deck should be mostly graphical rather than text. These graphics should be used to communicate your message and paint a story for the investors. Since the slides will be presented by you or someone on your team, someone will be able to explain them. Too much text can cause a distract investors from listening to your pitch and nobody likes reading paragraphs projected on a wall.
Second, each slide should provide more depth about your business plan and the pain points you’re trying to solve. This can include statistics you found or visuals, to provide investors with a deeper explanation of the aspects surrounding your business. Make sure to be as concise as possible and not to go overboard. The typical deck is usually 10-20 slides and you want to hit all your key points.
Lay Out Your Game Plan
Last, the deck should state how you’re going to build the business. In order to effectively lay out your game plan, you’ll need to talk about the industry and ecosystem you’re in and illustrate how your business fits into that ecosystem. You’ll then want to dive into your actual plan for building the business. A few things you’ll want to talk about include: the operational aspects (how you will build your product and scale the team), how you’ll sell it (your sales and marketing strategy) and what financial model looks like.
